Hot spring water temperatures can be brutally deceptive, due to high mineral content in the water and admixture with surrounding water. I've been in a spring where the surface was almost scalding but 6" below it was perfectly bearable, and where on one side of the kiddie-pool-sized pond it was also very hot, and on the other side it was great. You were wise to be scared.
